TORBA PROVINCE

During the 2023 Blue Prosperity Vanuatu Coral Reef Study, scientists studied nearshore reefs at a 10-metre depth across all six provinces to gather insights into the health of Vanuatu's marine ecosystems.

Vot Tande had one of the healthiest and most pristine reefs in all of Vanuatu and the region.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Across Torba, reefs ranged from some of the healthiest in Vanuatu to areas showing clear signs of stress, sometimes located right next to each other.

Strong reefs, like those of Vot Tande and parts of the Torres Islands, had high coral cover, many fish, and active reef growth. Protecting healthy reefs can help replenish nearby areas. Degraded reefs, such as southern Vanua Lava, showed lower coral cover, flatter reef structure, and signs of heavy fishing. Protecting less healthy reefs can help reduce pressure and give ocean life time to regrow and recover.
